Tenant Organizing

In partnership with nearby schools, we currently organize tenants in 6 apartment complexes in Montgomery County. Tenant leaders have formed associations at Cider Mill Apartments (Safe Places), Westchester West Apartments, and Northwest Park Apartments, to advocate for better living conditions including pedestrian safety, restoring public bus lines, better lighting, and working laundry machines.

Through our organizing, residents have won renovations at Northwest Park and Cider Mill Apartments. When Westchester West Apartments were being sold, we worked in close partnership with Montgomery County Council, the County Executive and the Department of Housing and Community Affairs to purchase and sell the 345 units to a non-profit developer, preserving affordability for decades to come.

This is on-going work that is interconnected with other countywide and statewide campaigns, from the intersectionality of climate and housing to better educational outcomes for ALL of our children. Tenant organizing has also been an opportunity for experiential learning about organizing for many leaders through participatory mapping methods, power analysis, and door knocking.
